Actually originated in the United States and was bred in California around 1910 as a commercial breed for the meat and fur trade. New Zealand Reds are calm, easy-going and friendly rabbits.
The New Zealand Red is a large rabbit with an average weight of 3-4.5kg (6½ – 10 lbs).
New Zealand Reds have a medium build; the body is fairly broad with a slightly arched back, the head shapely with full cheeks and upright ears.
New Zealand rabbits have medium-length hair that feels coarser and less soft than most breeds.

New Zealand Reds are calm, easy-going and friendly rabbits. They are usually good with children and other pets, very relaxed about being handled and rarely aggressive.
